Your Online Binge-Watching Is Hurting The Planet

Every half-hour Show Cases CO2  Emissions Equivalent To Driving 6.3Km, Say Climate Experts

Movie nights once required driving to the local video store to rent, rewind, and return to the latest blockbuster. Now on-demand video content providers offer countless binge-worthy options at the touch of a finger. But experts say the ease of streaming services comes with a hefty environment price tag.

Watching a half-hour show would lead to emissions of 6.28kg of CO2 equivalent, said Maxime Efoui-Hess of French think tank the Shift Project. That's equivalent to driving 6.28km.

Last year, online video streaming produced emissions equivalent to Spain and that amount may double in the next 6 years, according to the Shift Project.

While most of the online traffic -34%-is related to streaming videos, on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, for example, the next biggest sector is online porn.

"Digital videos come in very large file sizes and(are) getting bigger with each new generation of higher-definition video," said Gary Cook of Greenpeace, which monitors the IT sector's energy footprint.

Much of the energy needed for streaming services consumed by the data center
, which delivers data to your computer or device, Cook added.

The centers contribute about 0.3% of all CO2 emissions, according to an article by Nature.

"For energy consumption to stay flat for the next five to 10 years, significant improvement in IT equipment and data center energy performance made or our appetite for computations must finish," said Dale Sartor of the Center of Expertise for Data centers, linked to the US Department of Energy.

Anders Andrae of Huawei Technologies said he estimated they would consume as much as 4.1% of total electricity in the globe by 2030. Netflix Reported a 53% increase in international revenue in between  2017 and 2018, And Disney and Apple are launching their own streaming services this year.

Another Important Problem, Entertainment above Environment??

The number of young Americans watching online videos every
day has more than doubled, according to survey findings.
They're glued to them for nearly an hour a day, twice as long as they
were four years ago. And often, the survey found, they're seeing the
videos on services such as YouTube that are supposedly off-limits
to children younger than age 13. "It really is the air they breathe,"
said Michael Robb, senior director of research for Common Sense,
Media that issued the report. The survey of American youth
included the responses of 1,677 young people, ages 8 to 18. Among
other things, it found that 56% of 8-to 12-year-olds and 69% of 13-to
18-year-olds watch online videos every day. In 2015, those figures
were 24% and 34%, respectively.

That too with the increasing number of binge-watchers and Resolution demands the electricity consumption is henceforth increasing rapidly which means more global warming.

So what is the solution...
Well I fell We should use better tech that is less power drawing and also control how much we watch online because what we feed our brain is what it thinks about more often!
